Where did it happen?

The points of reference are the railroad junction of Manasses, the Shenandoah valley, Centreville, Fort Sumter, the Orange and Alexandria railroads.

What happened there?

The Union Army and The Confederate Army were involved.

The battle raged on until the union became outnumbered and had to retreat back to Washington with many casualties.

Why was this battle important?

The battle showed the Union that the Confederacy was stronger than they believed it to be.
