Describe what happened there? "Well Sherman’s general assault on Johnston’s positions at Kenesaw Mountain, near Marietta, Georgia. Sherman will describe the results in his memoirs: ‘About 9o’clock AM of the day appointed , the troops moved to the assault, and all along our lines for ten miles a furious fire of artillery and musketry was kept up. At all points the enemy met us with determined courage and in great force…. By 11:30, the assault was over, and had failed.’ In three major uphill assaults into a hail of shot and shell, the Federal troops capture not one breastwork. A Southern soldier will recollect: ‘A solid line of blue came up the hill. My pen is unable to describe the carnage that ensured in the next two hours. Columns after column of Federal soldiers were crowded upon that line. No sooner would a regiment mount our works than they were shot down or surrendered. Yet still they came… I am satisfied that every man in our regiment killed… fivescore men. All that was necessary was to load and shoot. In fact, I will ever think that the reason they did not capture our works was the impossibility of their living men to pass over the bodies of their dead. |

What was the significance of this battle? To tell the truth I didn’t read anything that stated clearly the main purpose of this battle. |
How did this battle affect the outcome of the Civil War? It made the western territory A little weaker.( Since many of their men died then for the Civil War they were at loss for some soldiers) |
Why did they fight a battle at this location? Because That is where Johnston was located so that is where Sherman went to get him. (I also believe that it was there because there were more hiding spots on the mountain.) |

My own thoughts and opinions about this battle.
The next two additional pages have a map of Kenesaw Mountain. The paper shows the landscapes of Kenesaw Mt. Most of my information was found in a book called "The Civil War" I got it from the library. Another resource I used was the Internet and I went under yahoo, typed in "The battle of Kenesaw", found the map, and landscape pictures. My conclusions to this project would be that many people fought and died at Kenesaw, but the names of those who fought were not listed on any of the websites that I had found. If you visit some of the websites then you should be able to identify more about the battle. ( Websites are listed below.) I feel there was no need to really have this battle from my understanding it did not really affect anything or help anything major.
