Double Boiler

An item that was used during the Civil War was the double boiler. The double boiler was an invention, used by many soldiers, that looked like a large tin cup. At the bottom there is a small door that opens so the user could replace or fix a candle, and to light or blow out a candle. Around the middle of the boiler there are small holes used as a lantern. At the top of the boiler there is a small cup that covers the top opening of the boiled. Soldiers would place water in the cup, and light the candle to boil the water for coffee.
This was very useful to soldiers; it was lightweight and easy to move from place to place. I believe that many soldiers were happy to have a lantern at night and hot coffee in the mourning.
