Overview:
Students will research specific people from this geographic area who participated in the Civil War, describe what event(s) he/she was involved, and how this event helped to shape the outcome of the Civil War.
Materials:
- Primary source documents
- Textbook
- Computer with Internet access
- MS FrontPage 98
- Artifacts used during the Civil War
Objectives:
- Research persons from this area who were involved in the Civil War.
- Describe the significance of specific battles of the Civil War.
- Identify personal accounts that refer to the causes of the Civil War.
- Explain the reasons why people became involved in the Civil War.
Procedures:
- Introduce the project by handing out the project guidelines and showing an example of the finished product.
- Give instructions how to develop a webpage using MS Frontpage 98 and demonstrate the use of the proposed template format of the webpage.
- Show the students a list of bookmarked websites and primary source resources.
- Students begin work on their team WebPages and complete the assignment during two weeks of class time.
- A peer evaluation will be conducted once the projects are uploaded to the server.
- All of the WebPages will be displayed to the rest of the class.
- I will evaluate the final product using the original rubric.

Student Guidelines for this Project:
The Situation:
You are organized into teams of 3-4 students. Each team of students will work cooperatively in order to successfully complete the following tasks.
The Individual Tasks:
Identify a person from this area who participated in the Civil War and explain---(one student)
- how they were personally affected by the war.
- what events they participated in.
- how they contributed toward the outcome of the war.
- why they became involved in the war.
- what types of items they used in their daily lives.
- Analyze an artifact that was used during the war. ---(one student)
- Create a Quick-time Virtual Reality (QTVR) of the artifact researched.
- Explain how the artifact was used.
- Describe the artifact in detail.
- Identify what device (if any) has replaced the artifact.
- Analyze a battle of the Civil War that is connected in some way to a person from this area. ---(one student)
- Describe the location of the battle.
- Explain how it affected the outcome of the war.
- Use a newspaper article to describe
- various details of the war.
- how the war affected the people in Champaign county.
- what life was like during the 1860s.
- how people viewed the conflict between the North and South.
- Include all of the above information in a webpage that is
- Well organized.
- Correctly spelled, grammatically correct, and has a complete bibliography.
Team Tasks:
Divide tasks A-C among the individual team members.
- All students will complete task D.
- Choose a team topic from the list below.
- Teams may create a new topic.
- I must approve any new topics.
- Remind each other to bring materials to class.
- Pen/pencil, paper, research materials, computer disk, etc.
- Assist each other with research.
- Help with bibliography page.
- Webpage technical assistance.
- Provide constructive criticism through peer evaluation and general comments.
- Help each other with technical questions.
- Spell and grammar check each other's work.
- Focus work on-task and not on distractions.
TEAM TOPICS:
Depending upon the person your team is researching, your team must address one of these topics or you may create another topic.
- Attitudes of Champaign County toward the Civil War
- Civilian support groups at home devoted to helping soldiers
- Camp life of soldiers in the army
- Tactics used during battle
- Soldier entertainment and recreation between battles
- Black soldiers in the Civil War

to the
Urbana Free Public Library Archives
We will be taking only one class of 8th graders at a time. 8-1 during periods 1-4a and 8-2 during periods 4b-7th.
At least 2 teachers will be present at the library at all times.
- Petersen & Joldersma during periods 1st – 4a.
- Petersen & Patterson during periods 4b-7th.
- The schedule below will be used to transport the students to and from the library.
- Petersen & Joldersma accompany 8-1 TO the library at 8:30.
- take attendance and give list of absentees to the office
- Patterson accompany 8-2 TO the library at 11:25.
- Joldersma accompany 8-1 FROM the library to the school at 11:55.
- Petersen & Patterson accompany 8-2 FROM the library to the school at 2:30.
- The first class (8-1) would need to bring their lunch. Food and drinks are permitted in the auditorium area which is adjacent to the archive.

Class Coverage: The following class periods will need to be covered for the following teachers:

The entire 8th grade class is taking a research trip to the Urbana Free Public Library Archives on Monday May 1, 2000. Each class of 8th grade students (8-1 and 8-2) will visit the library for one-half day. The purpose of the visit is to conduct research on people from the Fisher area who participated in the Civil War. Due to the nature of this class project, students will benefit from going and their attendance is highly recommended. Students who do not attend this field trip are NOT excused from attending their regular classes or from conducting research on the assigned project.
8-2 Students:
depart 8:25 from the Jr./Sr. High building during 1st period
will miss periods 1st – 4th
bring your lunch… we will eat it at the library before we return to the school
- no vending/pop machines are available
- no stops will be made at any restaurants
return at the end of 4B period (approximately 12:25)
8-1 Students:
depart 11:25 at the end of lunch (have everything you need for the fieldtrip with you before you eat lunch)
will miss periods 4B-7th
return at the end of 7th period (approximately 2:55)
Everyone:
bring note taking materials and U.S. History textbook
wear comfortable clothing
bring change for making copies of materials found in the library
- no items can be checked out from the library
- regular copies are 15 cents/page
- microfilm copies are 40 cents/page

Any parent who wishes to attend is encouraged to do so! Please call me, Glen Petersen, at 217-897-1225 or e-mail: glenpete@fisher.k12.il.us, if you are interested in attending. Parents may leave at anytime but you need to provide your own transportation.
