This poem was written some time durning the American Civil War. I believe the narrator was a loved one that was left at home while her spouse went to the war.
If We Knew
Author unstated
If we knew when friends around us
Closely press to say goodbye
Which among the lips that kiss us
First would ‘neath the daisies lie
We would clasp our arms around them
Looking on them through our tears
Tender words of loving kindness
We would whisper in their ears.
This poem starts out saying that deaths of the war are not known by anybody but the killer. The 3rd and 4th lines say that the people that are now dead now are buried underground is what I thought. The next to lines I believe are saying that we can only embrace the memories because you can’t talk to them. The last lines say that prayers and last things said to the people are treasures.
The author used Imagery, because you can imagine and picture this poem in your mind. You can see a burial going on. Second, it had mood, I believe the mood was more of a sad mood because the poem talks about death. The author also used a regular Rhythm. The poem had a Rhyme sceme and it is a,b,a,b,c,d,e,d.
I think this poem was a well written piece of literature. I also think that the poem was short, but the author got their point across.
Newspaper Article
By: Brady Deer
My article is from the Champaign Daily Gazette, pg.2, of Tuesday, November 6, 1863. The article is called "Troops Ordered Out." In this article the Governor of Virginia Ordered troops to Danville, Virginia. He ordered the troops from Richmond, Virginia to march and clear the road for howitzers(cannons), so they could protect people and their land in and around Danville. Anyone that is on the street with a firearm would be killed. Only authorized police and military were aloud with firearms. This article also states a riot that happened the Saturday before. Seven black men were killed in this riot. This happened after Friday that Colonel W.E Sims, coalition candidate for state senator, made a speech to colored and white people. Democrats state that they don’t think that the people will be afraid to go out and vote. They also say that the people won’t care about the army because accidents can happen. This newspaper was written about 2-3 weeks before the Battle of Chattanooga. At this battle the Confederates lost 361 men and 2,160 of the Confederates were wounded. The Union lost 753 men and 4,722 men were wounded. The Troop Commanders were William Farrar Smith for the Union and Braxton Bragg for the Confederates. This war took place here, because the Union was ready for revenge. That’s because they were murdered at Chickamauga, they fell back to Chattanooga to resupply and regroup. The Union troops were ready for the attack, but the Confederates didn’t follow right away and they arrived there on the 23rd of September of 1863. Commander Bragg ordered his men to occupy Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain. This way they could surprise them and ambush them. The Union failed again to win the battle.
