Medicine Plants

Violets are flowers that have leaves that are rounded or heart shaped. The flower is on the stem and comes from the center of the plant. These flowers are usually purple or yellow and purple and sometimes a reddish blue. Violets come from the herb family. During the Civil War many herbs were used as medicines. Violets were one of these herbs. These flowers were often used to treat skin disease. These delicate flowers were very abundant so they were easy to find.
The Trout Lily is a flower of yellowish color. Its leaves are oval-like and the flowers seem to hang down. Trout Lily is often known as Dogtooth Violet and is also from the herb family. During the Civil War it was used to relieve soldiers of hiccups, vomiting, bleeding from the lower bowels and a few other things
