The hot air balloon was used by The union. They would send up one to two men. One would be from the army and the other one would be a man who knew the land very well. Then they would come down and would be on there way. The hot air balloon had a rope tied to the bottom of the basket. There was three ropes. Later on they put a crank on the ground and one rope was used to hold on to the hot air balloon. The crank only needed one man to turn sometimes they would switch men to do the crank. Professer Thaddeus Was they first prisiner of war. Untill They found out that he was a scientist. The balloon went up by gas that would burn and gas made the balloon rise.
