Three fourths of the land in Denmark is farmland. There are between 25 to 385 acres per farm. Until the 1880's wheat was the most important crop of the land. That's when prices fell. The small crops cover about 38 acres per farm. In Denmark a 38 acre farm would be comparible to a 385 acre farm in the United States.
There are several crops grown in Denmark. Crops grown in Denmark are potatoes, cabbage, sugar beets, carrots, onions, barley, oats, wheat, rye, flax, hemp, hops, rape, and tobacco. Barley takes up half the farmland in Denmark. They feed potatoes to pigs or make it into alcohol. There are many crops in Denmark.
The main animals are cattle, pigs, and chickens. Most of the cattle are in Jutland, but there are also pigs in Jutland too. Dairy and beef cattle, pork, and chickens are Denmark's main meats.
To keep the land fertile they add chemicals to the soil for fertilizer. The chemicals help improve the productivity of the land.
They use trucks and ships to haul crops and others products. They use ships to haul crops to different countries. They use trucks to get from the farm to the slaughter house to the ships. Trucks and ships are most needed in hauling all products. They need ships because trucks can't get to island countries.
There are a lot of fish in Denmark. Some of the fish are cod, halibul, salamon, herring, Norway pout, sand lances, sprut, whiting, and trout. Around 20,000 people are employed in fisheries. There is about 600 inland fish farms in Denmark.
Fishermen might travel as far as 100 or 200 miles out to sea. They go out there because the fishing at the shore has dropped dramically in the last few years.
The fishwomen's job is to clean the fish. The women take the fish from the boat to the cleaners. They have to gut it and scale them. It takes them a long time.
Most of the fish is sold at auctions. Before the fish goes to
the market they are caught in nets and floating trauls near the
surface of the water. Before coming back to the dock they would
be out for several weeks. These auctions are small and cheap. It
only takes a short time to sell because the bigger marketers buy
there because it costs less.
