Copenhagen is about 8 centuries old. Copenhagen wasstarted by ancient Danish monarchs. Copenhagen's recordsdate back to 1167 when the fortress at Slot Sholmen wasbuilt. In the mid-1000's Copenhagen was a small fishingvillage, later it became a trade center because of it'sharbor. By the 1100's, Copenhagen had developed into a town.When Copenhagen was founded they called it Kobenhaven andthey still call it that today. "Koben" means merchant and"haven" means harbor.
There are many things that attract people toCopenhagen. Copenhagen's population with suburbs isat least 1.4 million people. One fourth of the Danish peoplelive in the Copenhagen area. Copenhagen is one of the mostbeautiful cities in Denmark with many beautiful parks andlandmarks. Delightfully perfect parks are an important partof Copenhagen life. Copenhagen is one of the largest citiesin Scandinavia. These features make it easy to fall in lovewith Copenhagen.
Copenhagen started as a fishing village where the Danish monarchs lived and grew into the capitol city in1536. It is located on the island of Zealand in the straitsthat connect the North and Baltic Seas. The Danish monarchsstarted living there in 1428. Some fishing villages are on the east coast ofthe island of Sjaelland. Some other parts of the city are onAmager, an island east of Sjaelland. Copenhagen is known formaking machinery, metalwork for ships, canning, andbrewing. Copenhagen is Denmark's industrial, educational, andcultural center and its leading port.
Copenhagen has many landmarks, museums, and otherattractions. One attraction is Tivoli Gardens AmusementPark. They have entertainment, the ballet, concert symphonies, dance halls, a pantomime theater, carnival rides, and restaurants. Tivoli Gardens Amusement park opened in1843. The most outstanding landmark is the great copper domeof the marble church. Across from the marble church isAmalienborg Palace where the royal family of Denmark lives.Amalienborg Palace is made up of four linked mansions builtaround a large eight-sided plaza. There also is a museumcontaining the work of Bertel Thor Waldson, a famous Danishsculptor. One of the most popular parks is named after H.C.Oersted the inventor of electromagnetism. ChristianborgPalace is where the Danish legislature meets. ChristianborgPalace once housed all of Denmark's governmental offices.Copenhagen is home to the Royal Danish Ballet and manymuseums. A small area in east central Copenhagen hasattracted many artists and craftspeople.
