Denmark is made up of five different land regions. Western Dune coastconsists of sandy beaches. The western sand plaines are flat. The eastcentral hills make up Denmark's largest region. The northen flat plaines were part of the sea bottom. The fifth region is Bornholm. Bornholm are small islands that lie closer to Sweden.
Denmark consists of a peninsula and 482 nearby islands. The area is(43,069 km ). The greatest distance from north to south is 255 miles. The greatest distance east to west is 250 miles. Jutland shares a 42-mile border with west Germany. Greenland is a province ofDenmark even though it is 1,300 miles away.
The Faeroes are a group of 18 islands located mid-way between Norway and Iceland. Jutland is a peninsula and forms 2/3 of Denmark's territory.The peninsula is 200 miles long and about 100 miles across. Glaciers once covered northern and eastern Jutland. The central part ofJutland contains plaines and hills. Denmark's largest islands are Zealand, Fyn, Lolland, Falster, Bornholm andMon. Zealand is the biggest island in Denmark. Fyn is the second largest island. White chalk cliffs rise up to 400 feet which mark the coast line of Mon, lolland, Falster. Mon and the smaller islands are called the "south sea islands " by the Danes.
The climate of Denmark changes through the seasons. It has a dampclimate chiefly because it is almost completely surrounded by water. In winter, seas are cooler than on land. West winds from the seas warm Denmark in thewinter time and cool in the summer time. Winter temperatures average about 32 degrees F(0 C). Denmark's coldest days are 15 to 20 degrees F ( -9 to -7 degrees C). Summer temperature averages about 16 degrees C
Denmark is slightly more than twice the size of Massachusetts. It is 0.6%as large as the United States not including Alaska and Hawaii.
