Denmark is a country that is made up of fjords, peninsulas, and islands. Fjords are natural cuts in the land along the coast. A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on 3 sides. An island is a piece of land totally surrounded by water. Denmark has a cliff that hangs over the North Sea.Shaggy and untamed, the Rabjerg Mile, on Jutland'snorthwest coast, fringes over the North Sea with shifting sand and lyme grass.

Thousands of years ago Denmark was covered with ice. Denmark was coveredby glaciers. The surface was packed with icehundreds of feet thick. Over the centuries the iceregularly advanced and melted back. This allowedanimals and people to live and settle along the fringesof ice and follow its movement.

There are ten land regions. There names are Jutland, Amager, Fyn, Falster,Zealand, Northern Flat Plains, WesternDune Coast, East Central Hills, WesternSand Plains, and Bornholm. The JutlandPeninsula makes up more than half of the country. The country is mostly made up of islands and peninsulas. There are many small lakes and many rivers. One of them is the Guden. The Faeroe Islands are volcanic and are located northwest of Scotland. There are 18 main islands. They have namessuch as Koltur, Hestur, Mykines, Streymoy, and Nolsoy. The Northern Flat Plains were once part of the seabottom. The region rose from the water when the weight of the old glaciers was removed by melting. Many farms arein this region. The Western Dune Coast consists mainly of long sandy beaches that extend along almost the entire western coast. In the Southwest are marshes that the tide covers regularly. The East Central Hills are Denmark's largest region. This region includes most of Jutland. Long, narrow fjords form natural harbors along the coastlines of this region.Bornholm and other islands are closer to southern Sweden than to Denmark. Granite rock covers most of this region.
