Copenhagen, Denmark: Capitol

Copenhagen began as a small village in the twelfth century. At that time they had about 1,428 residence of the Danish Monarchs. In 1254, Copenhagen received its first royal character, Christopher I. He reigned from 1252-1259. Copenhagen expanded to the north and west in the 1850's. Today the towering Christianborg Castle is a direct descendent of Abalon's twelfth century.

Copenhagen is the capitol and by far the largest manufacturing center in Denmark. There are many businesses in Copenhagen. They mainly have metal working, engineering, and buses that unload the many passengers. For hundreds of years fish were sold in a small village called Gammlestrand. This was once the village that is now called Copenhagen. The streets and highways extend out from the center. Hotels are aroundtheTown Hall Square.

There are many types of recreation in Copenhagen. The "New Town" of Copenhagen contains Amalienborg Palace complex were the Queen lives. This Palaceconsists of four separate buildings, each with a different name. The royal family uses the upper story of Schack Palace. Tivoli's offers various forms of entertainment, including ballet, rides, and concerts. At night Tivoli's lightens up, with many musical performances. The Royal Theater is run as a state institution in Copenhagen, Denmark. It contains ballet, drama, opera and modern dance by contemporary and historic Danish figures.

Copenhagen has many important statues and buildings. Little Mermaid is a world's famous statue. It is found on Copenhagen's harbor. "The Little Mermaid" is based on a fairy tale created by Hans Christian Anderson. Other interesting places are the Amalienborg Palace, the Stock Exchange, and the New Carlsberg and Thorvalden Museums.

There are many interesting people in Copenhagen. Hans Christian Anderson, who started his career in Copenhagen, became a world famous story teller.His works, including "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Red shoes," "The Tinder Box," and "The Ugly Duckling," have been translated into many other languages. Carl Nielsen, was born in a village south of Odense. Like Hans Anderson, he was poor and traveled to Copenhagen to begin his career. He joined the Royal Orchestra. He learned music of Hadyen and Mozart very well. Bertel Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen. He was the only Danish visual artist to have achieved worldwide fame. He studied at the Copenhagen Academy, which is where he won a scholarship to Rome. This is some of the information I learned about people from Copenhagen, Denmark.
