NEPAL COMES TO
MRS. LEA'S THIRD GRADERS
Namaste!
Our 3rd grade class compared and contrasted many aspects of Nepal, including its geography, religion, urban and rural life, schools, foods, money and special holidays with the United States. We were in touch via email with two Nepalese men who supplied us with lots of our information. These men were Bhawuk Dharm of the University of Hawaii, and Bijaya Shrestha of Kathmandu, Nepal. On our World's Fair Day we presented a Buddhist stupa, an open air market, and a stand at which we sold 'tikas', the decorative dot the Nepalese wear. We had stations set up which gave information on the Himalayas, the animals and people of Nepal along with examples of their money, clothing, food and pictures of some of their special celebrations. Activities included:- Made sarees and topis (hats)
- Made bhai bracelets (Brother's Day)
- Constructed a Buddhist stupa
- Made ceremonial masks
- Wrote reports based on information supplied by our two friends and compiled them into books on Nepal
- Made informational books comapring and contrasting our two cultures
- Sold tikas for 5 cents a piece and donated the money to a Nepalese school

Our stupa
The Buddhist stupa, known as the "monkey temple", with its all seeing eyes was fascinating.

Open air market
We sampled things we would be able to find at a typical open air market.

The sale of "tikas" will benefit some children in Nepal.
Here are some other interesting web sites on Nepal that we have found:
